Swastika symbols and racist slogans have been scrawled along the main thoroughfare on Sydney’s Bondi beach – home to a large Jewish community.
Police said they would investigate the 15 swastikas drawn in permanent marker and racist graffiti such as “not white? Not right” scribbled on bus shelters, paths and footpaths on Campbell Parade.
Police have condemned the graffiti and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
Supt Jason Box said: “The NSW police force takes crimes that are motivated by hatred or prejudice very seriously and any such crimes will not be tolerated.”
Vic Alhadeff, the chief executive of the NSW Jewish board of deputies, said: “It is hurtful [to Jewish people] given the swastika represents Nazi Germany. At the same time it’s offensive to all Australians because Australia fought against Nazi Germany.
“How very disappointing that there are those who feel the need to express their bigotry in this way.
“A swastika is more than graffiti. It represents the ultimate in racial hatred.”
