Swarms of mosquitos 'invading' homes during mini heatwave

Mosquitoes have "invaded" Formby, according to a number of perturbed people living in the town.

One woman told the ECHO : "I suppose it comes with the lovely weather, but I was caught completely off guard.

"It's like they have invaded my house. My partner and I were eaten alive last week! I've had to buy insect repellent. I guess it's the closest thing we are getting to going abroad this year."

The recent hot and humid weather is the perfect breeding ground for disease carrying insects.

June has brought a taste of summer with temperatures nearing 30C in parts of the country last week, as sunseekers enjoyed the mini-heatwave following a washout May.

And with the hot weather set to continue, the use of paddling pools and other water-based outdoor activities can also create ideal conditions for mosquitoes.

Commenting to hyperlocal site Formby Bubble, a number of others say they're suffering with the "blighters".

Pam Blain said: "I use electronic pest controllers and so far they seem to have done the job."

Brian Foote wrote: "Always had them."

One woman said she was "bitten badly" by the "nasty little blighters" last week.

The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) lists advice for getting rid of mosquitoes on its website.

Breeding sites such as guttering, water butts and bird baths should be cleaned out regularly.

Fly screens over open windows will prevent adults coming in, while aerosol fly sprays will kill individual mosquitoes.

If the problem persists, the BPCA recommends you contact a professional pest control company.
