Swarms of ‘lovebugs’ invade South Korea

  • Millions of "lovebugs" have invaded South Korea, swarming hiking trails and urban areas across the capital, Seoul.
  • These insects, officially called Plecia longiforceps, are harmless, as they do not transmit diseases or sting humans.
  • Footage from Tuesday showed hikers swatting away the bugs and workers clearing dead ones, particularly around Gyeyang Mountain in Incheon.
  • First detected in Seoul in 2022, these bugs, known for flying in pairs while mating, have become a recurring summer phenomenon in the capital.
