Swansea University fire: New campus goes up in flames with smoke billowing into sky

Firefighters tackled a blaze that engulfed Swansea University's new campus.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the roof of the central engineering building at the university's Bay Campus.

Wales' Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters arrived at Fabian Way at 6.08pm with at least five engines deployed to the area.

Reports say that no one was in the building when the fire started. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The pyre of smoke could be seen from across the city, reports Wales Online.

Julian James, 43, site security manager at Swansea Bay campus, said: “One of my officers spotted black smoke at 6.08pm this evening and the fire brigade were here within six minutes.

“The last staff members, cleaners, had clocked out at 5.45pm and security were on their way to lock the building.

“At the moment we are trying to assess the situation to establish the cause if the fire.

“It was isolated to one area, but we don’t know the extent of the damage yet.”

Swansea University said on Twitter: "We are aware of a fire in Engineering Central at the Bay Campus.

"The fire service is in attendance. We’ll provide further updates when we can."

A statement released by the fire service says: “Firefighters from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance at a building fire on Swansea University Bay Campus, Fabian Way.

“Joint Fire Control received the first call at 6.08pm.

“Fire appliances from Morriston, Swansea Central, Swansea West, Port Talbot and a Water Bowser from Tumble are all in attendance.

“The fire is contained within a three-storey building, with the first floor, second floor and roof alight.

“No persons have been reported inside the building.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place once the incident has concluded and further information will be released in due course.”
