Swansea Tesco ordered to improve after inspectors found too many shoppers inside

A Swansea Tesco was hit with an improvement notice after a series of breaches of coronavirus guidelines, including staff whose masks were ‘falling off’.

Swansea Council issued the notice on Tesco’s Llansamlet store on Sunday, December 20, following a visit by council enforcement officers.

The company has since taken measures to rectify issues identified by officers, and the notice has now been rescinded.

Their action was taken after breaches identified included congestion at the tills, and a need to reduce the number of customers in the store to allow people to social distance safely.

Officers also noted ‘masks are falling off the faces of employees within click and collect’.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The safety of our colleagues, customers and suppliers is our number one priority and we are working with local public health authorities, following all Government guidance and taking the relevant precautions.

“We have extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular cleaning.

“We’ve taken action at Swansea Llansamlet Extra in response to this notice from the council, which has now been rescinded.”

The notice issued to Tesco was one of a series made over recent days to an array of businesses, following a tightening of coronavirus restrictions.

They include Timpson House Ltd, situated within Asda in Morriston, which was also issued with an improvement order.

David Hopkins, Swansea Council cabinet member for delivery and operations, said: “Our public health teams are working closely with retailers in the city to make sure they have put in place measures to allow social distancing in stores and to ensure they monitor numbers of people inside their stores.

“We’re pleased that Tesco have acted quickly to address the requirements of the improvement notice.

“The public also have a role to play when visiting stores to ensure they keep their families and staff safe – this means not visiting stores in groups or stopping to chat in aisles while shopping.

“We recognise these are difficult times for everyone but we are confident if we all play our part we can get through this pandemic together.”
