Swansea school cancels annual presentation evening in wake of Coronavirus

A Swansea comprehensive school's annual presentation night has been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Olchfa Comprehensive School was due to hold the event at Swansea University's Bay Campus tomorrow night - Wednesday, March 11.

It would have seen hundreds of parents gather for speeches and to see pupils receive awards for achievements during the academic year.

But the school, which is based in Gower Road, Sketty , emailed parents and carers this morning before 9am to inform them of the news that the event would not be going ahead.

There have now been six confirmed cases of COVID 19, Coronavirus , in Wales.

The email from the school stated: "As a precaution, we have taken the decision to postpone Annual Presentation Evening.  Although there is no specific advice relating to school events, we believe this is a reasonable step to take in order to minimise risk.

"It is important to note that there are no suspected or confirmed cases in the school."

The two latest cases of coronavirus were confirmed this week by Public Health Wales.

It said one was a resident of Neath Port Talbot and had recently returned from southern Italy, while the second, from the Newport local authority area, had recently returned from northern Italy. Both patients are being managed in "clinically-appropriate settings".

Around 16 million people, more than a quarter of the Italian population, are in a state of lockdown until April 3 as the infection rate of Covid-19 continues to rise.

Italy has registered more cases of coronavirus than any country outside China, while its death toll has risen to 366.

A spokesperson for Swansea Council said: “We are following national public health advice which currently recommends that there is no need to cancel events.”
