Swansea's Wind Street will be closed to traffic over Christmas because of public safety fears

A street popular with drinkers in Swansea will be closed to traffic for public safety reasons over Christmas.

Wind Street, as well as roads around Castle Square and St Mary's Square, will be closed to traffic, including buses and taxis, for nine days over Christmas and New Year.

First Cymru said this is due to the "expected crowds of people who are likely to frequent the various licensed premises".

The annual closure has been agreed between South Wales Police and Swansea Council as well as the Safer Swansea Partnership, to make sure people visiting the area over Christmas remain safe.

Wind Street, Castle Square and St Mary's Square will be closed to traffic on the following dates:

  • From 2pm on Friday 13th December
  • From 2pm on Saturday 14th December
  • From 2pm on Wednesday 18th December
  • From 2pm on Thursday 19th December
  • From 2pm on Friday 20th December
  • From 2pm on Saturday 21st December
  • From 2pm on Tuesday 24th December
  • From 2pm on Thursday 26th December
  • From 6pm on Tuesday 31st December

A spokesman for Swansea council said: "The early closure of Wind Street has been planned to enable the thousands of visitors to the location to enjoy the festivities in a safe way. This is something we do every year at Christmas and has been done in partnership with local police and licensees."
