Swansea's old Mamma Mia’s restaurant to be transformed into shops and offices with green rooftop meeting pods

A prominent Swansea city centre building which was once home to a popular Italian restaurant looks set to undergo a huge transformation.

The 1950s building, located at 18 & 20 Princess Way, is fondly remembered as the old Mamma Mia, which served pizza by the metre and closed its doors back in 2018. Last year, we reported how it was up for sale for £1.1 million.

And now it appears it is set for a brand new lease of life, thanks to plans submitted to Swansea Council's planning department through Llanelli based Morganstone.

The company has asked the authority for permission to transform the old Italian eatery, also known by some as the former Smith-Llewellyn building, into retail units to the ground floor, with three storeys of offices above, including a roof terrace and three rooftop meeting pods and green infrastructure.

Planning documents state the development would result in the "overall betterment" of the current appearance of the building, which it describes as deteriorating.

It would adopt a contemporary design, with glass panels, making a "bolder statement at a prominent location".

"It provides a great opportunity to deliver a positive impact on the surrounding urban space and enhance the public realm providing a more positive welcome to workers and visitors, whilst creating an important social space for meeting and encounter through Swansea Council’s wider regeneration programme," plans state.

The council's planning department will now consider the plans.
