Swansea's new indoor arena site from the air as the massive structure continues to take shape

Drone footage of Swansea’s new indoor arena has offered a bird’s eye view of the massive structure slowly emerging in the heart of the city.

The arena will welcome up to 3,500 people to enjoy events there when it opens its doors, depending on what happens in the future with coronavirus of course.

It will have a gold-coloured skin when the outer layer of the arena is put in place next year.

Swansea Council, in a statement, said the arena’s walls had been designed in such a way as to ensure it had top acoustics and was also sound-proofed.

The statement said: “Please enjoy our latest drone image of the arena site. It looks in the Mumbles direction from above the LC. The marina’s on the left, Tesco on the right.

“The image shows the frame of the 3,500-capacity arena with an emerging public square in front of it.”

Swansea Council bosses have said that the aim of the development is to transform the city centre to ensure it’s a “great place to spend time, live, work and enjoy” (WalesOnline/ Gayle Marsh)

The statement added: “Between that and the LC is the 50m-long span of the broad, gold-coloured pedestrian/cyclist bridge that, once complete with its artist-designed sides and canopy, will be moved into position over Oystermouth Road; it will link the two halves of the £135m Swansea Central Phase One scheme."

“A key focus is now the arena’s walls that will ensure great acoustics, sound-proofing, eco-friendly insulation and, of course, protection from the weather."

With many people working from home in Swansea during the pandemic, much of the work on the site is taking place away from public view.

But the council said there would be more big changes next year.

“Early next year the arena’s appearance will change markedly as the outer layer is applied.

“This gold-coloured skin will be studded with more than 77,000 LED digitally controlled light bulbs ... it’ll be a stunning sight!”

The state-of-the-art venue is hoped to be a major draw for tours, acts, conferences and events.
