Swansea Pride has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic

Swansea Pride has announced it is postponing this year's event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual celebration, which features live entertainment and stalls, was supposed to begin on May 4, 2020.

In 2019, Swansea Pride was a week long of events and culminated in the biggest parade yet.

The National Waterfront Museum, where the bulk of Swansea Pride 2020 was set to be held, has also announced it will be closed until the end of May.

Chairman Elliott King issued a statement explaining that the decision was made to protect those who would attend and work at the event.

The statement said: "Due to the unprecedented situation around the world with Covid-19 we have taken the decision to postpone Swansea Pride 2020, which was due to take place in May.

"This decision has been taken considering all the advice available to us, and to minimise the risk to those attending. We hope to rearrange for later in the year and we hope you understand this difficult decision."

Mr King said the decision had received support from the public.

"The reaction has been very supportive from everyone, I think people understand the situation and for us it was about trying to make the decision as early as possible so traders and suppliers are aware and it wasn't a last minute thing," he said.

"We were thinking about people attending and people working at pride as well and we are working with the events team at Swansea Council to decide the feasible next step."

He added: "The difficulty is we don't know how long this will go on for."

Though it is not yet known when the celebration will go ahead, Mr King stressed the decision was temporary and it would not be the end of Swansea Pride.
