Swansea now has a free fridge anyone can take 'good quality food' from

A community fridge - where people can take what they need - has been unveiled in Swansea.

Charity Caer Las hope the scheme will help hard-up families who may feel too ashamed to ask for help.

Food in the fully-stocked fridge has been provided by three supermarkets as well as from donations.

The organisation's finance director Ioan Davies said: "It provides fresh food instead of it going to landfill.

"A number of our clients will be benefiting from this, but it is also open to the public, it is open to everybody. We try and make sure there is no stigma attached. This will benefit those who are struggling."

The fridge was unveiled earlier this month and has proved a lifeline to people in need, charity bosses say.

"We don't encourage people to take more than what they will use," Mr Davies said. "We tell them to take what they need.

"We work with three supermarket chains, Tesco , Lidl and Marks & Spencer, and they donate a whole variety of things to us - lots of bread, vegetables and baked and dry goods, along with desserts, custard, olives. We get flowers too which people are free to take."

"They are all within the use-by date and best before date, but may have damaged packaging and are not viable to sell."

Mr Davies said the scheme had given out one tonne of goods to date.

He added: "If people want to give something financially to support the service they can, but there is no obligation."

Caer Las said it needed volunteers to come forward to help run the service.

The community fridge is located at the charity's Connect Centre in Cambrian Place. It runs on Monday from 1pm until 4pm, Tuesday from 11am until 4pm and 10am until 4pm from Wednesday to Friday.

Information about food deliveries can be found by following the Swansea Community Fridge Twitter page.
