Swansea named one of the cheapest places in the UK to buy a pint

Over the last decade, the average cost of a pint of beer has gone up 30% from £2.81 to £3.57, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The most expensive place in the UK to buy a beer is, unsurprisingly, London. On average, a cool one will set you back £5.18 there.

If you want to get the cheapest pints on the planet you’ll have to go a bit further afield to Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, where you can grab a lager for as little as 39p, according to figures from the finder website .

But if you're heading for a night out a little closer to home, there's one city in Wales that's proving a bit more cost effective than others when it comes to beer.

Swansea has been ranked the 9th cheapest place for beer drinkers in the UK - and the cheapest in Wales - at £3.31 a pint on average.

You’ll be forking out another 15p per pint further east in Cardiff , and an average pint in Aberystwyth costs 25p more than in Swansea.

That adds up over a night at the local.

The pub workers of Swansea put the cheaper prices down to a few different factors.

Jane Holloway is deputy manager at Eli Jenkins on Oxford Street, Swansea, where she has worked for 20 years.

She’s seen prices rise and fall in that time but puts the current low cost of a pint down to increased competition.

“We’ve dropped our prices and we’ve got deals running because of competition from Wetherspoons and with Wind Street just around the corner,” she said.

A pint of John Smiths will set you back £2 in Eli Jenkins and their most expensive beer is Stella Artois at £3.75.

The duty manager at the Pump House in Swansea, who didn’t want to be named, said that the city was a “great place to drink” with some fantastic pubs.

A pint of Brain’s Smooth is £2.85 at the Pump House, but you won't get much change from a fiver for their most expensive beer, Peroni, at £4.80 a pint.
