Swansea Mayhill riots: Concrete barriers installed on hill where cars were torched

Huge concrete barriers have been installed in the street were cars were torched hours after Thursday's riots in Swansea.

Council contractors were seen installing the deterrents in the rain on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday night hundreds of people were seen gathered in the Swansea area when what started as a vigil to 19-year-old Ethan Powell descended into large-scale disorder.

At its height video footage shows one car being set on fire while another vehicle was badly damaged before being pushed down the steep hill as onlookers cheered. Mr Powell's family have since condemned those who took part in the riots.

Devastating images also show completely torched cars of local residents and extensive damage to nearby properties while a video also showed people throwing objects and shouting at retreating police using riot shields in the disturbance. The day after the damage the council installed the barriers at the scene where the burnt-out car wreckages stood less than 24 hours before.

The decision comes after previous calls were made for concrete blocks to be installed to replace missing bollards on the road.

Sam Bennett, the Welsh Liberal Democrat council candidate for Swansea's Castle ward, said the party wrote to the local authority about residents’ concerns and their calls for bollards that would stop cars smashing through the barriers in February 2021.

Mr Bennett added the first instance of a car freewheeling in Waun Wen took place on February 3 this year.

Meanwhile South Wales Police have announced extra patrols in Swansea over the weekend.
