Swansea man with heart condition is stranded in South Africa with just three days' medication left

A Welsh holidaymaker faces a race against time to get home from South Africa - before his heart medication runs out.

Phil Walker, 57, takes 20 tablets a day for his heart condition but has been left stranded in South Africa as his flights were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Walker travelled to the country with his partner Michelle Hall after being given the tickets for Christmas.

But the pair have seen flights home cancelled with both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways after planes were grounded.

South Africa is on full lockdown to deal with the virus and Mr Walker’s illness means he is vulnerable to Covid-19.

Mr Walker, of Mumbles, Swansea, said: “If I’m not flown out of here by the weekend, I will be out of all my medication.

“The Foreign Office has told me to go to a clinic here, but how can I go out of the gates and put myself in line of the virus?”

Tonia Antoniazzi, MP for Gower, called on the government to get him home.

She said: “He is very poorly, he is very vulnerable and we need to get him home as a priority.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has promised that tens of thousands of Britons stranded abroad would be given help to fly home.

“We’ll continue working around the clock to bring people home.”
