Swansea Half Marathon runner dies after 'collapsing' during race

A runner has died after 'collapsing' at the Swansea Half Marathon today.

A post on the event's website states: "With regret, we can confirm a participant has died at the JCP Swansea Half Marathon on Sunday 23, June 2019."

The statement said: "We are working closely with all emergency services into the circumstances of the incident.

"Our deepest condolences go to their family and friends at this time."  

The death comes some months after two runners died last autumn during the Cardiff Half MarathonWalesOnline reported.

The cause of the runner's death is not yet known (Wales Online WS)

More than 5,000 people took part in the Swansea Half Marathon  today as well as the associated wheelchair race, family dash and 2km fun run.

The course started from the  Brangwyn Hall , taking in the sights of  Mumbles , before returning towards SA1 and crossing the finishing line near Museum Green.

Condolences have been paid online to the runner.

One participant, Alan Whiffin, tweeted: "Swansea half marathon done today in 2 hr 18 - really enjoyed it, but just found out the devastating news that a fellow runner collapsed and died during the race. Such a tragedy for someone so fit and healthy. RIP."

Another said: "Just heard that someone died during the Swansea Half marathon. Sad news. Never expect that when setting off. Condolences to family and friends."
