Swansea 'first in line' for share of $6.2 million dredging

CLOGGED: An aerial photograph of Swansea Channel.

SWANSEA will be part of a dredging program billed as one of the largest fully funded by the state government.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said a total of $6.2 million would be split between the Swansea area and other sites including Ettalong channel at Brisbane Water.

The channel's troubles have been well documented in recent years despite dredging in October last year.

Mr Martin said Transport for NSW was also weighing "longer term options" for Swansea.

"Swansea Channel is first in line for dredging as part of this program, which will free up space in the channel for the local recreational and commercial boating community," Mr Martin said.

"The area of the navigation channel known as the dog-leg, near the southern entrance to Swan Bay, will be the focus of most of the dredging work.

"Other shoaling hot spots, such as near the drop-over, will also be addressed.

NSW Maritime chose the five sites as part of its role overseeing dredging statewide.

"Once further investigation work has been completed, the full program and timeline for the work will be communicated to the local community," Mr Martin said.
