Swansea Council hit by green recycling bags shortage as remaining stocks are rationed

A national shortage of green recycling bin bags means Swansea Council is running short.

The authority has temporarily suspended full replenishment of stocks at its outlets, and the facility to order green bags online.

Instead, it will be focusing its remaining stocks on replacing supplies that can be collected via the the kerbside tag reorder system.

In a message to councillors, Swansea Council cabinet member for environment, enhancement and infrastructure management Mark Thomas said: "Due to a National shortage of recycling bags, there may be a period of time when we are going to be without green recycling bags if we continue to distribute them in the manner that we are doing so now.

"Most of the outlets will have some remaining stocks but we may not be in a position to fully replenish stocks at these locations until we receive our new supply.

"We will be issuing further communication on this in the coming days but expect that these are precautionary measures for a temporary supply issue".

The next delivery of green bags is expected by the authority in the week commencing September 27, meaning the temporary shortage should be alleviated then.

But the authority said it cannot speculate on any future supply issues.

It also said kerbside collection crews will be making sure they have enough bags on board to cope with any extra demand.

A spokesman added: "This is a short term action to help us maintain supplies of green bags while we wait to be resupplied and ensure we can provide bags to residents when they need them.”
