Swansea City transfer news as striker now a target, 'dialogue open' over signing and Aston Villa fans stick boot into Borja Baston

These are your Swansea City headlines on Saturday, May 14.

Pompey keen on Whittaker

Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker is now a target for Portsmouth.

Reports on the south coast of England suggest the League One side are keeping tabs on the former Derby man, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Lincoln City.

Head coach Russell Martin has already indicated that the majority of players who spent their seasons away from SA1 last term are likely to leave the club this summer, whether that be on permanent on loan deals.

Whittaker is one of those, with his path to Martin's first team congested. Swansea are said to be in dialogue with Pompey over Marcus Harness, who has emerged as a target for the south Wales club, despite a clause being triggered in his contract.

The Fratton Park outfit have previously been linked with fellow Swansea forward Kyle Joseph, who, like Whittaker, is expected to be playing his football away from Landore next term.

Villa fans stick the boot into Borja

Aston Villa supporters have taken a lot if glee in recents days in celebrating the permanent signing of Phillipe Coutinho from Barcelona.

And rightly so, in many ways. They've captured a €140million midfielder for a snip at €20million and his acquisition is likely to take them onto the next level under boss Steven Gerrard.

Some fans have taken the opportunity to reference on social media Borja Baston's disastrous loan signing from Swansea back in 2020 to illustrate how far they have come as a club.

"Two seasons ago, we announced Borja Baston wouldn't play in Project Restart. Now we've signed Philippe Coutinho. THE Philippe Coutinho. Absolute madness how far we've come," wrote one, and many more chimed in with similar comments.

Borja was indeed a hugely underwhelming signing for Villa but he has reinvented himself since. He headed back to Spain after his short stint at Villa Park and he has flourished. He is bang in form for second division outfit Real Oviedo, hitting 19 goals this season.

Cooper's third time lucky?

Steve Cooper will be hoping for third time lucky in the play-offs this afternoon. His Nottingham Forest side head to Sheffield United in the first leg of their tie for a place at Wembley later in the month.

Cooper guided Swansea to two play-off finishes in consecutive seasons during his time in south Wales. In his first campaign, Swansea lost to Brentford in the semi-finals, while in his second term he went one better by getting to the final, where they were outplayed by the same opposition.

The Welshman has taken Forest from the relegation zone to the last four in a remarkable managerial feat.

The scoreline at Bramall Lane is currently 0-1 to the visitors at half-time.
