Swansea City transfer news as star linked with Wolves and Brighton, Eustace confirms offers and ticket price rise explained

Your Swansea City headlines for Tuesday, July 5.

Benda linked with two PL clubs

Brighton and Wolves have been credited with showing an interest in Swansea goalkeeper Steven Benda.

The German shot stopper started last season as the Swans' first choice shot stopper but swiftly fell behind Ben Hamer in the pecking order. He was sent out on loan to Peterborough United in January for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, with the Posh keen to sign the 23-year-old on a permanent basis this summer.

Swansea are willing to let Benda leave having already signed Andy Fisher in January in addition to recalling Lewis Webb from his loan spell with Shelbourne. And Football Insider claim that Premier League duo Brighton and Wolves are both exploring the option of making a swoop for Benda.

The goalkeeper - who has made eight first-team appearances for Swansea - has two years left to run on his contract in south Wales.

Eustace admits to previous Championship offers

John Eustace admits he has been offered numerous jobs by Championship clubs prior to his appointment as head coach at Birmingham City.

The 42-year-old left Queens Park Rangers to take charge at St. Andrew's following the departure of Lee Bowyer. It comes just a year after Eustace was poised to be named as Steve Cooper's replacement at Swansea before a late U-turn saw him remain with QPR.

“I had been offered two or three really good roles as head coach in the Championship over the last couple of seasons,” he said, as quoted by our sister title BirminghamLive. “I was enjoying my development at QPR, enjoying working for two fantastic managers and obviously my time at QPR can to the end.

"This job came up and it’s a great fit for me, working in Birmingham, I am a Birmingham lad and I am really proud and honoured to be head coach of the club."

Swansea travel to Birmingham on Saturday, September 10 before hosting the Blues on Saturday, February 4 next year.

Downes misses friendly

Flynn Downes did not feature for Swansea in their pre-season friendly against Colchester United on Tuesday.

The midfielder is expected to depart south Wales this summer, with Crystal Palace showing a strong interest in the 23-year-old. And the Englishman was not involved as Russell Martin's men played two 60-minute matches against the League Two outfit at Fairwood.

Ticket price rise explained

Swansea cited a rise in costs as the reason behind the hike in ticket prices for the 2022/23 season.

The Swans have published their full matchday ticket price structure ahead of what will be Russell Martin's second campaign at the club. But many fans noted their disappointment with the rise in prices in what are tough times for people throughout the country due to the cost-of-living crisis.

A statement read: "The club has been fortunate to not have to increase ticket prices for many years. However, due to the increases we are facing as a business across staffing costs with wage increases, food costs and utility bills, we have to bring our prices up across the board."

However, it has been confirmed the Swans will continue to run a number of money-saving initiatives while the club also stated that - despite the price increase - their tickets remain among the cheapest available in the Championship.

Ahead of the new season, a new armed forces discount has been made available while the ‘kids for a quid’ and ‘bring a mate for £8’ offers will once again occur next term. Swansea are also among a small group of second tier clubs to reach a reciprocal agreement with Reading to cap away tickets at £20 for fixtures between the sides in the upcoming campaign.

Ex-Swan sustains injury in Pompey trial

Portsmouth do not intend to sign Josh Gould following the former Swansea youth goalkeeper's trial with the club, according to Danny Cowley.

The 25-year-old was released by Swansea this summer and recently linked up with Pompey in his quest to find a new club. However, it has been confirmed that the goalkeeper will not be joining the League One club.

"Josh Gould has a nasty ankle injury unfortunately," Cowley told The News. "He got injured quite early on against Gosport to be fair to him, but he won’t be for us."
