Swansea City transfer news as Silverstein makes spending statement and linked Aston Villa star's summer move 'collapsed'

These are your Swansea City headlines on Thursday, October 20.

Silverstein's transfer statement

Swansea City chief Jake Silverstein says he understands fans' frustrations over the club's transfer dealings but stressed the long-term sustainability of the the club is the owners' focus.

Silverstein, who has now taken up a formal stake in the club after his loan note was recently converted into equity, attended the game against Reading on Tuesday - sitting in the East Stand for the first half - and will address supporters at a fans' forum on Thursday night.

Ahead of that appointment he spoke to the club website on a number of topics and spoke about Swansea's spending in recent windows.

“We understand it can be frustrating if we are not splashing money in any given transfer window, although I think we have largely done very good business in each transfer window over the last couple of years,” he said.

“We are trying to be disciplined and methodical, and we try to be opportunistic, but we have to make sure the club is financially stable.

“We take that very seriously, we do not want to chase an unrealistic dream. We want to build something sustainable, and we want to go up over time by developing our talent, by using our player trading model to help keep the books balanced.

“But, as someone connected to the club and someone who cares about the on-pitch performance, you do want to do things like signing players and spending money. Your heart wants you to do that, but we have to have cooler heads prevail.

“It’s one of the most challenging aspects. As a lifelong sports fan and athlete, moving into an ownership role was illuminating in terms of understanding what it’s like when the buck stops with you.

“When you are responsible for the organisation’s global health. It’s not just about how we do in any one game or any one season.

“I know people understand that at a theoretical level but to live with that responsibility and factor it into every decision is not easy, but we are trying hard to balance our enthusiasm for the team with our responsibility as long-term stewards of this club.

“We have to make sure we are not reckless and not living beyond our means.”

Sanson's summer move 'collapsed'

Reports from France yesterday linked Swansea with an ambitious loan move for Aston Villa's Morgan Sanson.

Championship rivals Sunderland were also mentioned, along with French clubs Lille and Strasbourg, with the outlet stating the midfielder "wishes to leave" the Midlands outfit after having few opportunities.

Indeed, it is interesting to note that Sanson tried to leave the Premier League side in the summer, with our colleagues at BirminghamLive reporting last month that a loan deal to Spanish club Espanyol "collapsed" due to the paperwork being submitted too late.

A Swansea move for the 28-year-old appears extremely fanciful for a player who arrived at Villa Park for £14million in January 2021 but all evidence points to him leaving Steven Gerrard's side in January.

Fulton wants more goals

Jay Fulton says he would like to add more goals to his game and revealed Swansea's new signings already understand the magnitude of the derby on Sunday.

Fulton's renaissance in Swansea's midfield has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, with the Scot scoring the winner against Reading on Tuesday night.

It was a peach of a hit, one which he knew was in from the moment he struck it.

“It was one of those, I thought it was in as soon as I hit it,” Fulton said of his goal.

“I’d like to add a couple more goals. That’s not my main job but it’s always nice to score.

“There’s a massive game coming up at the end of the week, and we wanted to get this win against Reading to give us momentum going into the weekend, especially on the back of the defeat to Burnley.

“We know how important the derby is. I’m sure it’ll be a full house and the fans will be up for it. We need to match that.

“I think the new boys already understand how big the game is just from being around the city, but we need to make sure we’re going into that match with a game plan and look to play our way and build on this good run we have been on."
