Swansea City transfer news as Burnley boss makes admission amid Obafemi interest and expectation for duo revealed

Your Swansea City headlines on Friday, January 13.

Kompany's transfer admission amid Obafemi interest

Vincent Kompany says Burnley's transfer targets must be able to hit the ground running should they secure a move to Turf Moor this month.

The Clarets are interested in signing Swansea's Michael Obafemi and have already had two bids for the Irishman rejected.

And the Belgian stated that those who join the Lancashire outfit before the 11pm deadline on January 31 will have been recruited to cover the possibility of playing in either the Premier League or the Championship next season.

"It is actually not too difficult to guess what we will be doing," he said, as quoted by our sister title LancsLive. "You have mentioned end of contracts plus loans and you tally all those up and you are going to need to replace them. We see the same thing.

"The only thing perhaps where I am a little bit on a different timeline is I don't want to project anything past us winning games in the Championship, that is the only thing that matters.

"It is a different problem to solve later on but for now the players we have are good, we want to see if we can add a little bit short-term and long-term, players who fit in either scenario.

"If we do (sign) a player now it will have to be a player that can help us right now and that can be with us in either scenario so the market is not that big for us - a player that can be good enough for the Premier League if that happens but also good enough to help us in the Championship if we stay in the Championship."

Expectation on duo becomes clearer

Swansea expect Ryan Manning and Joel Latibeaudiere to remain with the club for the rest of the season, WalesOnline understands.

Both players are out-of-contract in the summer and are yet to sign fresh deals with the club.

Indeed, Russell Martin has already confirmed that Manning has turned down a new offer from the club while Latibeaudiere was said to be assessing his options.

But it's understood the club are not expecting to offload either of the two players in the January transfer window.

There is the possibility that one or even both players puts pen to paper on a new deal to extend their stay with the club.

Manning has featured in 25 matches in all competitions so far this term, scoring three goals while Latibeaudiere has made 21 appearances for the club throughout the campaign so far.

Cullen never had doubts

Liam Cullen says he always backed himself to make an impact at Swansea City following a tough spell on the fringes since making his first team bow.

Cullen made his senior debut for his boyhood club in a Carabao Cup clash against Crystal Palace in August 2018 but has since had to be patient for regular game time at senior level.

He missed out on a number of loan opportunities while injuries have also hampered his progress. The striker joined Lincoln City on loan in the second-half of last season but has stepped up under Russell Martin of late, scoring goals against Coventry City, Reading and Watford.

And the academy product says his training ground work has ensured he has been able to produce the goods when finally called upon.

"I don't think anyone can ever doubt themselves. That's when it really becomes a problem," he said.

"I've always believed in my ability and I've always believed in what I can do. It's the reason I've got from the age of eight in the Under-9s through to the first team.

"I just needed to keep that belief and keep doing what I've been doing in training every single day and luckily it's paying off."

Goalkeeper leaves

Archie Matthews has joined Oxford City on loan for the remainder of the season.

The goalkeeper moved to Swansea last summer following his release from Birmingham City.

He has been a regular at age grade level in the Swans' youth system, and he will now spend the rest of the campaign in the National League South.

False perception over Swans: Mowbray

Tony Mowbray believes there's a false perception over Swansea this season given their current position in the league table.

The Swans are 15th in the league standings ahead of their clash with the Black Cats, although they are just four points adrift of Middlesbrough who are fifth.

And Sunderland boss Mowbray is only too aware of the threats Russell Martin's men will pose his side at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

"I've been studying them this week. They're number one in our 24-team league for ball possession, number two for shots at goal. There's a perception that they're not having a good season, but they're a very good football team," he said.

"We felt that in the first-half away there. We were playing without a centre-forward that day.

"Their middle centre-half [Harry] Darling kept waltzing through the middle of the team. Until we addressed that we were in trouble because they're a very good football team.

"We have to be wary of them. It's a difficult game. We need to get after them and make sure they know they're in a football match."
