Swansea City to sign third former Bristol City midfielder on a free transfer

Swansea City are set to complete the signing of Jamie Paterson on a free transfer following his release at Bristol City in June, with confirmation expected before the weekend.

As reported by Wales Online, Paterson will join former Robins Liam Walsh and Korey Smith in south Wales with all three having made the switch along the M4 after seeing their contracts in BS3 expire.

The 29-year-old playmaker will also become new Swans boss Russell Martin's first summer signing after he took over this week following the departure of Steve Cooper.

Paterson had spent a significant part of pre-season on trial at Middlesbrough, training and playing under Neil Warnock during their tour of Devon and Cornwall.

However, Swansea have won the race for the former Nottingham Forest and Coventry City midfielder who was among 10 first-team players to have been released by Nigel Pearson at the end of last season.

Paterson made 157 appearances for City over five seasons and became a popular figure among sections of the fanbase but he was also dogged by inconsistency towards the end of his time at Ashton Gate.

Swansea open their Championship campaign against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday with Paterson's registration expected to be completed in time.

Bristol City face Swansea at Ashton Gate on Friday, August 20 in a televised match on Sky with the Swans midfield potentially comprising Smith, Paterson and Walsh, although the latter is nursing an injury sustained in pre-season.
