Swansea City to play pre-season friendly against Serie A side Atalanta - reports

Swansea City will host Serie A side Atalanta this summer, according to reports.

Italian media claim the Swans will be one of three British teams to host the Bergamo-based outfit, with Leicester City and Norwich also allegedly lined up.

Neither Swansea or Atalanta have confirmed the fixture yet, but it's understood that the Swans are set to arrange a pre-season friendly the weekend before the season starts on August 3.

Coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta enjoyed the best season in their 112 year-history last term, qualifying for the Champions League for the very first time by finishing 3rd in Serie A, despite having one of the league's smallest budgets.

The Italian side became part of Welsh footballing folklore after slipping to a shock first leg defeat to Merthyr Town in a famous European Cup Winners' Cup tie back in 1987, but have since proven to be tough opponents on the European stage, thumping Everton 5-1 in the group stages of the Europa League in 2017.

They are likely to present a stern test for the Swans as they prepare for the new season.

Swansea have already confirmed away games with Crawley Town on July 13, Exeter City on July 20 and Bristol Rovers on July 23.
