Swansea City start ripping up disastrous pitch as workmen arrive within minutes of final whistle

Workers have started the process of renewing the playing surface at the Liberty Stadium just minutes after Swansea City's Championship win over Barnsley.

The turf at the home of the Swans and the Ospreys has rapidly deteriorated of late.

A number of factors were to blame, including a period of disease on the pitch in the late summer/early autumn along with a congested fixture schedule.

And the club have acted swiftly to rectify the issue.

Immediately after Swansea's Championship 2-0 triumph over Barnsley, workers started to lift the roughed up turf and smoothed out the surface in preparation for a new surface to be laid down.

The work is expected to take two to three days to complete.

To allow the pitch to bed in, the Ospreys' Boxing Day derby with the Scarlets will no longer be played at the Liberty Stadium.

It means the next fixture to be played at the venue will be Swansea's league clash with Reading on Wednesday, December 30.

Swansea spend around £30,000 on their pitch every year, although they forked out approximately £550,000 to relay the surface completely in the summer of 2019 for the first time since moving to the venue 15 years ago.

Swansea's victory over Barnsley lifted them up to third in the table.

They return to action against Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day.

Speaking about the pitch after the Barnsley game, Swansea boss Steve Cooper said: "I know it's been a talking point for a number of weeks. It's not easy, but you've got to play a game of football on it.

"We've been winning here, and I think that's the most important thing. It'll be a little bit different the next time we come here.

"We've dealt with the conditions really well. We've managed to play football when we can, because that's when we're at our best, even though it was a little bit different today. We did the job."
