Swansea City next manager odds after John Eustace rejection as Chelsea icon and Newport County boss among contenders

Quite where Swansea City turn next for their vacant managerial job is anyone's guess.

Sunday saw QPR assistant John Eustace, the Swans' preferred choice to succeed Steve Cooper, perform a shock U-turn and reject the offer to take charge of the Liberty Stadium outfit.

on Saturday, Eustace was in attendance as QPR defeated Manchester United 4-2 in a pre-season friendly at The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium and he was expected to be announced as Swans boss imminently.

However, Swansea have now been left in limbo with just 13 days to go until their Championship opener against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday, August 7.

Alan Tate is expected to take charge of the Swans' pre-season fixture at Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday night, but where they go after that remains to be seen.

Tate is in fact among the list of candidates the bookies have to take over full time.

So, too, is Chelsea legend John Terry, who is currently the assistant boss to Dean Smith at Aston Villa. Earlier this week, though, reports linking him with the job were shot down by sources at the Swans.

Newport County boss Mike Flynn, who lost the League Two play-off final to Morecambe earlier this summer, is also fancied by the bookies, however it is another Welshman who is installed as favourite.

Former under-23s boss Cameron Toshack, son of former Swansea, Real Madrid and Wales boss John, is the leading contender to take up the job following this latest twist.

Toshack left the Liberty back in 2019 to coach Cypriot outfit Pafos FC. However, he left the role in October 2020 after earning the highest win percentage by any manager in the club's history, and has been out of full-time work since.

Below are the bookies' odds...

  • Cameron Toshack - 5/4
  • John Terry - 4/1
  • Michael Flynn - 5/1
  • Alan Tate - 12/1
