Swansea City news as former striker appears in court and starlet makes big impression

Your Swansea City headlines on Wednesday, December 14.

McBurnie appears in court

Oli McBurnie has appeared in court to stand trial after being charged with assault by beating.

The Sheffield United frontman - who started his professional career at Swansea City - was charged after allegedly assaulting Nottingham Forest fan George Brinkley after the Championship play-off meeting between the sides in May.

Home supporters poured on to the City Ground pitch to celebrate after Steve Cooper's Forest secured a penalty shootout victory over the Blades to progress into last season's play-off final at Wembley.

Several players and coaches were confronted by supporters, with McBurnie allegedly assaulted Mr Brinkley by beating.

McBurnie pleaded not guilty to the charge in the summer and has appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday ahead of what is scheduled to be a two-day trial.

The Scot has scored nine goals in 18 league appearances for Paul Heckingbottom's side so far this season. McBurnie joined the Blades from Swansea in the summer of 2019.

Martin expects more Wales chances for Cooper

Russell Martin is confident that Ollie Cooper will have a successful international career if he maintains his impressive form at club level.

The attacker was named on the standby list for Wales' World Cup squad and travelled with the 26 players to Qatar for the tournament. And Martin says the feedback received on the 23-year-old's efforts in the Middle East were hugely positive.

"The feedback we got from the staff, sports science, Gilly [Matt Gill] spoke to Alan Knill, they're all really impressed with him," he told WalesOnline. "I presume that'll lead to more opportunities, but he's got to keep doing what he was doing before the break with us.

"As long as he keeps doing that, we're all pretty confident that he'll have quite a good international career and he'll be involved with his country for quite some time. I think there was no doubt he was going to impress them with the way he conducts himself as a lad and the shape he's in physically. I hope he's done all of that and from we've heard he's made an impression which is good."

Ntcham's 'beautiful' moment

Olivier Ntcham described Cameroon's 1-0 World Cup win over Brazil as one of the most beautiful moments of his career.

The attacker came off the bench to help fire the Indomitable Lions to a famous victory over the five-time champions as Vincent Aboubakar struck home a last-gasp winner.

And having played a key role in the historic success, Ntcham - who has five goals to his name in the Championship this season - admits he is now hoping to maintain his impressive form at club level.

“It was really amazing to be part of the World Cup,” Ntcham told the Swans website.

“I enjoyed every second there. It was a really nice experience and a good trip for me as a player and for my family because they were so happy for me. There were ten of my family there!

“I had a calf injury which kept me out for a week to ten days so I came back for the Brazil game. It was a really great game. We won and we made history with that game. It was an unbelievable memory for me.

“I think it’s one of the beautiful moments in my career. It was so good to be in the stadium, with my team-mates, the fans – it was amazing.

“Now I’m back [at Swansea City], I want to help the team and the club just like I did before I went to the World Cup.”

Coventry injury updates

Swansea face Coventry City on Saturday in what will be their final Championship fixture before Christmas.

The contest is set to go ahead as originally scheduled after the Sky Blues signed a new licence agreement with Frasers Group to continue to play home games at the Coventry Building Society Arena until May 2023.

Mark Robins' side will be without Matty Godden who is continuing to recover from an ankle injury while veteran defender Kyle McFadzean remains absent due to a calf injury.

Striker Tyler Walker will also miss the visit of the Swans due to a torn cruciate. Kick-off in the West Midlands is at 3pm on Saturday.
