Swansea City make official approach to MK Dons as Russell Martin closes in on vacant manager's job

Swansea City have made an official approach to MK Dons for boss Russell Martin, WalesOnline understands.

Martin had been identified as one of two front-runners for the vacant hot-seat at the Liberty Stadium, alongside Chelsea assistant Jody Morris, after previous first-choice contender John Eustace withdrew from the running due to personal reasons.

Both men are understood to have held conversations with the hierarchy this week, and it now seems as though Swansea are pushing ahead with efforts to appoint the MK Dons boss.

Despite holding conversations with the Swans, Martin himself had previously played down any official approach from the Swans to his current employers for his services.

He had also insisted that he would be in place to take charge of the Dons' Carabao Cup clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.

It remains to be seen if that will still be the case, but efforts to take Martin to the Liberty Stadium have clearly taken a significant step forward in the last few hours.

Indeed, after a chaotic summer, it could well be a significant breakthrough for the Swans, who will be desperate to have a new man on board ahead of the opening game of the Championship season next weekend.

It's not yet clear just how much the club will have to pay in compensation in order to secure Martin's services, although reports elsewhere have suggested it could be around £400,000.
