Swansea City identify Joe Rodon replacement as Tottenham try to tie up late transfer deal

The clock is ticking, and ticking fast.

At the time of writing, there is just three hours to go until the summer transfer window closes.

Tottenham Hotspur now face a race against time to try and conclude a deal for Swansea City centre-back Joe Rodon, who has emerged as a key target for the north London club in recent weeks.

It is reported that the Swans are holding out for an £18million fee from Spurs to part with one of their star assets, who played a key role in helping the Welsh outfit reach the Championship play-off semi-finals last season, only to be beaten by Brentford.

Despite Swansea's demands, Spurs are not yet willing to give in, with head coach Jose Mourinho, who will be hoping to see his side register another Premier League win when they face West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, desperate to add a fresh body to his defensive options.

It is well documented that Spurs wanted to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar before the international transfer window closed earlier this month, but the club was unable to strike a deal with the Italian giants.

Now, though, it appears as though Spurs could have been handed a breakthrough in their hopes of landing Rodon.

According to our sister title - WalesOnline - the Swans, who have enjoyed a strong start to the 2020/21 Championship campaign, Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Ryan Bennett has emerged as a potential target ahead of the window closing later today.

Bennett, 30, spent time on loan at Leicester City last season and would add a wealth of experience to Swansea's defensive options.

It is not the first time that the Swans have been keen on securing the former Peterborough United and Norwich City man, with the club having registered an interest in his services all the way back in 2012.

With Swansea looking into the prospect of adding another centre-back to manager Steve Cooper's squad, it could mean that Rodon could be cleared to join Spurs. That, though, depends on whether Spurs and Swansea can reach an agreement.

At this moment in time, football.london understands that both clubs remain far apart in their valuations of the player, meaning a deal could be beyond the realms of possibility.
