Swansea City hit by mumps outbreak as Landore academy training complex shut down and Man Utd game called off

Swansea City have been forced to take precautions to protect their first team from an outbreak of mumps.

The club has confirmed to WalesOnline that academy players were told to stay away from the club's Landore training complex last week.

Three young players and one coach are believed to have contracted the virus and Landore itself was, until today, shut down.

The outbreak is not believed to have affected the first team, but did cause the under-23s clash with Manchester United to be called off on Friday night.

Swansea's under-23s usually train with the first team at Fairwood training ground, but given the number of players in their squad regularly linking up with the under-18s academy side, they will now be based at Landore this week, in a bid to further protect the first team.

The Premier League International Cup quarter-final clash with Benfica B on Wednesday is expected to go ahead as planned.

There was one unexpected upside of cancelling the clash with the Red Devils, namely the return of Jordon Garrick to the senior set-up, after the winger had previously spent four months out with a hamstring injury.

Garrick had initially been in line to play for the under-23s in a bid to further work on his fitness, but was included in the matchday squad to face Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, netting his first ever league goal during a crazy 4-4 draw.

Seeing the 21-year old back in action will have been a big positive for Steve Cooper, but the club have nevertheless been taking the outbreak very seriously, and further measures to protect the senior side have now been put in place.

Last month Swansea RFC were forced to call off two matches after a mumps outbreak among the squad, while Newport RFC and Abercynon RFC were also hit.

Newport County were also hit by mumps in December when midfielder Taylor Maloney contracted the contagious disease. He was forced to miss a couple of games and other players were also affected.
