Swansea City headlines as striker leaves and Leeds United drop Sam Greenwood hint to Swans and Nottingham Forest

These are your Swansea City transfer headlines on Saturday, January 1.

Whittaker joins Lincoln on loan

Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker has joined Lincoln City on loan for the remainder of the season.

The former Derby County man came close to linking up with the Imps back in the summer, but a move fell down on deadline day.

Now, the League One outfit have moved quickly to secure him until the end of the campaign.

Swansea said in statement: "Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker has joined Lincoln City on loan for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, subject to international clearance.

"The 20-year-old links up with Michael Appleton’s Imps, who currently sit 20th in League One at the turn of the year.

"Whittaker joined the Swans from Derby County in January 2020, and has scored five goals in 22 appearances for the club.

"His goals include a hat-trick against Plymouth in the Carabao Cup this season, a treble which made him the first Swansea player to take home the matchball since Scott Sinclair did the same in the 2011 Championship play-off final.

"Everyone at Swansea City wishes Morgan every success during his time at the LNER Stadium."

Bielsa drops Greenwood hint as scout sent

Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest are keen on a loan swoop for Leeds United's Sam Greenwood.

The striker has been on Swansea's radar since Cooper's days in south Wales and his name has cropped up again in recent days.

Our colleagues at LeedsLive report that Forest sent a scout to watch him in action recently and Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa has hinted he is not against sending his young players out on loan this month - if they are guaranteed minutes.

"It's a subject where it's a possibility," he told LeedsLive. "Players who are immediately below the group of the first-team [U23s], they only have one reason to stay at the club - that they have real possibilities to dispute a place in the team, that they have the desire to fight for their space and show that they deserve it.

"With those parameters, we will make the decision that's best for the players and for the club," Bielsa said.

Whittaker's departure heightens Swansea's need for an addition in the final third for the second half of the season.

Keep, loan or sell?

The transfer window is now open for the next 31 days.

In a Covid-impacted environment we may not see as much movement and business as in previous years. Indeed, Martin has said already that the Welsh Government's decision to move games back behind closed doors in Wales will have an effect on Swansea's transfer planning this month.

What is apparent, however, is that incomings and outgoings will still happen at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Our fan columnist Guto Llewelyn has already highlighted the players who could be leaving SA1 this month, and our Swans correspondent Ian Mitchelmore revealed the transfer status of every member of Martin's first-team squad here.

We've broken it down to a keep, loan or sell scenario - read it all here.
