Swansea City headlines as midfielder moves onto radar, Flynn Downes sends boss message and Swans pay tribute to Nev Wilshire

These are your Swansea City headlines on Sunday, December 12.

Swans linked with midfielder

Our colleagues at the Daily Record report that head coach Russell Martin wants to sign Ipswich Town's Scott Fraser in January.

Fraser, who used to be on Dundee United's books, is a former target of Celtic and Hibs.

Martin knows him from their MK Dons days together, where he made more than 40 appearances during the 2020/21 season.

Fraser only signed for the Tractor Boys last summer, but it appears that the Swansea head coach wants a reunion with the 26-year-old in south Wales.

A six-figure deal could tempt Ipswich but any decision is likely dependant on who they appoint as manager.

Downes: System suits me

Flynn Downes says he is happy to play a more deeper role after switching positions in the defeat to Nottingham Forest.

With Kyle Naughton out due to a Covid-related issue, Downes slotted into a back three alongside Ben Cabango and Ryan Bennett.

Downes did well but his presence in the middle of the park was subsequently missed.

But he has told his gaffer that he'll play anywhere for him.

“I didn’t mind it, I actually enjoyed it,” he said. “I think with the way we play suits me.

“I’ll play anywhere, I’ve told the gaffer that, but obviously we’ve got Kyle Naughton coming back and he’s the main man isn’t he so I’ll leave that to him.

“We’ve got a big squad and a lot of talented boys so I suppose that’s what you need if you’re a big club.”

“We’ve just got to bounce back from this really - it’s a tough result to take but we move on to Saturday,” Downes added.

“We need to build a bit of momentum. Before these last three games we were building that, we were getting a few wins and I think when that happens your confidence starts to build up and you play better, so we need to get back to that on Saturday and I’m sure we will.

“We go back to work on Monday, working hard and we go from there.”

Swans pay tribute to Nev

Swansea have paid tribute to supporter Nev Wilshire who has sadly passed away.

Father-of-four Nev, who was in his early 60s, died on Saturday morning.

Nev, who found fame on the BBC reality series The Call Centre, was a big Swans fan.

On Swansea's official Twitter account, a message read: "Rest in peace, Nev. Once a Jack, always a Jack."

Earlier this year he took part in a series of charity football matches for SellebritySoccer.

Among the events he took part in recently included a fundraiser in memory tragic Swans fan Mitchell Powell, who died just aged 26.

Date confirmed for FA Cup tie

Swansea's clash against Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup will take place on Saturday, January 8.

The game will kick off at 5.30pm.

The Swansea.com Stadium fixture will be screened live on BBC Wales.
