Swansea City headlines as Jake Bidwell challenged, Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp makes loan star point and Connor Roberts told of Burnley 'hierarchy'

Your Swansea City headlines for Monday, November 1.

Bidwell's Martin admission

Jake Bidwell says Russell Martin challenged him and Ethan Laird to add goals to their game during the early stages of his time as Swansea head coach.

Bidwell notched the opener against Peterborough United on Saturday to score what was his second goal of the campaign following his effort against Cardiff City earlier on in October.

The defender - who is out of contract next summer - had only scored once in his first two seasons at Swansea.

But the former Everton, Brentford and Queens Park Rangers man says the work being carried out on the training ground during international breaks has played a key role in ensuring the players fully understand their roles under the new regime.

"Everyone can see the style and what we're trying to do now. I'm sure it's enjoyable to watch and it's enjoyable to play for," he said after the 3-0 triumph over Peterborough.

"The way the manager is asking to play, we're playing high up the pitch and get into goal scoring areas.

"Every manager you work under has different styles and different ideas. It's up to us as players to take that on and carry it out to the best of our ability.

"You can see watching it, it's a bit different. I'm just trying to do what the manager is asking of me and help the team in the system.

"We didn't get a pre-season with the manager so it's only right that we've used the breaks so far to really nail down the style. We've worked really hard in the breaks and you're seeing that come to fruition now."

Klopp bigs up Williams

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised Swansea loan man Rhys Williams for the maturity he and Nat Phillips showed last season during the Reds' defensive crisis.

The boss was forced to pair the two together at the heart of Liverpool's defence after long-term injuries endured by Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

What followed was a steady partnership that started off an unbeaten run that still exists, and Klopp credits it for turning their season around.

"We had to find solutions last year and maybe we didn’t do all of them right," Klopp said.

"That is how it is when you are under pressure and you have to make decisions a few days after.

"I think the moment we started playing and trusting Rhys and Nat, all the other things fell into place as well and that was when we got stability back and looked much more ourselves again than before.

"We have not lost a game at all since then, in moments we needed luck or whatever or late goals, but in general we know when we are on top of our game we are difficult to play [against]."

Williams hasn't seen the game-time he would have liked in south Wales but he remains firmly part of Martin's plans going forward.

Dyche's Roberts message

Sean Dyche has opened up on his talks with Connor Roberts after the Welshman was left out of Burnley's squad for their 3-1 win over Brentford at the weekend.

Roberts missed the opening stages of the season due to the groin injury he sustained during Wales' 4-0 Euro 2020 defeat to Denmark in June.

He made his debut for the Clarets in a 1-0 Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham last week, although he did not feature in Burnley's 20-man squad for their contest with Thomas Frank's side at Turf Moor at the weekend.

And Dyche says Roberts - who moved to Burnley from Swansea on transfer deadline day - must prove his worth given the number of squad options he has at his disposal at present.

“I spoke to him before the game, I said we still have trust in him," he told the Burnley Express.

”I thought Connor was excellent in the week and I explained to him that there is still a bit of loyalty, trust and hierarchy.

”When we have had our players we tend to treat them properly.

“And Bardo [Phil Bardsley] has been really good for us, he could easily have started for us the other night, and I explained to him that I wanted to get Connor some football.

“Connor knows the script, he’s here to keep developing, moving forwards, as does Nathan [Collins], and they have certainly made a good start to what they’re going to do here in the future.

“Nathan Collins has been ever so unlucky, and that was our captain coming back in, he has been absolutely excellent, but Ben is a very good player and played well in the week.

“There is a balance but it is good to have those situations. Lowts, he has that added competition and we want it all over the field.

”We want the players to be stimulated from playing against opponents but also in house to raise the bar.”
