Swansea City headlines as chief explains director's Christmas aims ahead of January transfer window

Your Swansea City headlines for Sunday, December 26.

Fixture and streaming update

Swansea City fans who purchased tickets for postponed matches will be automatically refunded.

The Swans have had three consecutive games called off due to a rise in Covid-19 cases across the United Kingdom.

It means that Russell Martin's side have missed out on facing Queens Park Rangers, Millwall and Luton Town over the festive period.

However, all season ticket holders and seasonal hospitality guests have been provided with a streaming code to watch the home contest with Fulham on Monday, January 3 online given that supporters are not permitted to attend sporting events in Wales at present.

"With the rising number of Covid cases across the UK, that has had an effect on football fixtures up and down the country, with clubs and squads adapting to the situation as best they can," said chief executive Julian Winter.

"Unfortunately, however, our trip to Millwall on Boxing Day was postponed, while we will play games at the Swansea.com Stadium behind closed doors following new restrictions imposed by Welsh Government earlier this week.

"As a club we are devastated for our supporters because you all went so long without football very recently and with crowds being back in stadiums from the beginning of this season, that really gave everyone a huge lift.

"Not only that, but festive football is a huge tradition for us here in the UK and for our supporters not to have that this year is really disappointing, but there will be a time when we are back together once again."

Chief explains board member's Christmas aims

Julian Winter says Jake Silverstein plans to monitor all aspects of day-to-day operations during his visit to Swansea.

American Silverstein - who is on the club's board of directors - arrived in south Wales earlier this month and has integrated himself into the surroundings at the Swansea.com Stadium and the club's Fairwood training complex.

As part of the Silverstein's visit, it's understood the American will assist sporting director Mark Allen in communicating with the club's majority owners on all matters surrounding the January transfer window.

"I am in regular contact with the ownership group, which also leads me onto my next point," explained Winter.

"Jake Silverstein is currently with us in Swansea after flying over from America. Jake, who is part of the board of directors, is spending a month here with his family and is fully immersing himself into life in the club and city.

"With the travel restrictions in place since he joined the board last year, Jake was keen to fly here as soon as possible, and this has been an opportunity for him to meet staff, the squad and as many people connected with the club as possible.

"There have been some big changes within the club this year, with Mark Allen joining as academy director in January, before being promoted to sporting director in August.

"Following Andy Scott’s recent exit, Mark is working closely with head coach Russell Martin in relation to player acquisitions and departures as the January transfer window nears."

Championship schedule further impacted

The Championship schedule continues to be impacted by a rise in coronavirus cases across the United Kingdom.

The Swans were unable to face Millwall at The Den on Boxing Day due to a Covid-19 outbreak within their camp.

And Hull City's clash with Blackburn Rovers at the MKM Stadium on the same day was postponed just hours before the scheduled kick-off time of 3pm.

It meant just a total of two second tier fixtures went ahead as planned on December 26.

Middlesbrough's clash with Nottingham Forest at the Riverside Stadium and Huddersfield Town's contest with Blackpool at The John Smith's Stadium were the only Championship matches to survive on Boxing Day.
