Swansea City favourite Michu is back in football as he joins new club

Swansea City favourite Michu is back in football.

The former Liberty Stadium striker hung up his boots in the summer of 2017 after being plagued by a series of ankle problems.

His injury issues surfaced during his time with Swansea where he was an instant hit with supporters, scoring 22 goals in all competitions in his debut season.

Signed for just £2million, he was a bargain who paid back his price tag several times over and developed a close connection with fans in SA1.

But his second campaign was marred by problems and he was eventually loaned to Napoli where his rotten luck continued on the sidelines.

After being released by Swansea he joined amateur side Langreo, run by his brother, before linking up with former club Real Oviedo for one last crack. He called time on his career at the age of 31 and after performing the role of director of football with Langreo, he moved to the position of technical secretary with Oviedo once again.

He left there a couple of months ago after investing time and money in the project - but now he's back and has joined Burgos CF in the Spanish third tier as sports director.

Michu described it as "a great opportunity" as he endeavours to carve out a career in football off the pitch.

President of the club Franco Caselli said: "We have had many meetings to have the best sports director and, both me and Antonio (Caselli) convinced us of the hunger for success that Michu has."

Michu said: "(This is) an opportunity. Perhaps from the outside it is not seen as much, but the internal work that is being done is impressive and very professional, (which is) unusual in second B.

“I know where I come from, to a place with enormous potential but that is currently in fifteenth with 20 points.

"We have to get players who are aware of the opportunity to be here, who want to defend this shirt. I know what this field is, here I played with Real Oviedo in Segunda B and I had to descend, so I know the history of this club."

The 33-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Spanish club.
