Swansea City fans deliver overwhelming Russell Martin verdict and tell him where his transfer priority lies

Russell Martin's Swansea City tenure is under way.

It is only 12 days old but his new outfit have already played two matches, a league defeat at Blackburn Rovers and a confidence-boosting demolition of a youthful Reading side in the Carabao Cup.

It is clear from the first two games that Martin's tactics are going to take a while to filter through to his new players, but there were clear signs in Berkshire that they are already coming to terms with what their new head coach wants from them.

Goalscorer at the Select Leasing Car Stadium Joel Latibeaudiere said that under Martin's tutelage they are only going to improve, starting with a difficult-looking clash against Sheffield United on Saturday night.

“Playing against a team that has just been relegated is going to be tough but we’re buzzing for it. Especially after a performance like that," he said following the victory over the Royals.

“The gaffer said to us after the game that there are still loads of things that we need to work on and improve on, and we’re just going to get better with him.

“Every day we’re training hard and hopefully Saturday we can put a performance like that in again.”

Supporters will be back in the Swansea.com Stadium for the visit of the Blades and it will be a chance to welcome Martin to south Wales for the first time.

It is clear from our recent survey that fans are more than happy with his Martin as their new head coach.

When asked on a scale of 1-10 how happy they were with his appointment, from a total of 2,168 responses, the most popular (21 per cent) vote from supporters was eight out of 10.

That was closely followed (18 per cent) with a 10 out of 10 vote.

Seven (14 per cent) and nine (11 per cent) were the next cabs off the rank in an overwhelmingly positive verdict of the new man's arrival.

Next, we asked where fans think Swansea will now finish. Thirty-five per cent of you (from 3,233 responses) think a mid-table finish is on the cards, with 21 per cent voting for a top-half outcome.

Nineteen per cent believe Swans could finish in the bottom half, while 12 per cent feel a third play-off finish is achievable.

Finally, we asked supporters to identify where Martin needs to strengthen his squad.

Fifty-six per cent of 3,195 voters believed his attack needs addressing as soon as possible, with 22 per cent picking out his midfield as an area to look at bolstering.

Thirteen per cent believe defenders are needed, while just nine per cent voted for a goalkeeping signing.

The man himself knows further signings are needed.

"It just depends on where we’re at with injuries and where we're at with people who are interested in our players," he explained when asked if he wants to make more signings at Thursday's press conference.

"But I think there’s a couple of key areas we need to strengthen purely just for numbers.

"We’ll just have to wait and see, we’re not going to rush into anything.

"It needs to be right for us and for the team. I know people are desperate to see new faces, new energy, but at the same time, it needs to be the right person for us.

"Often in the transfer window for some strange reason, good players become available really late on.

"The later on it goes, the more likely we are to see someone come in."
