Swansea City eyeing reunion with Watford star Ben Wilmot and the big factor that could swing transfer race in their favour

Watford are reportedly set to make a decision on centre-back Ben Wilmot's future this summer, with Swansea City among the list of clubs credited with a possible interest in taking him away from Vicarage Road.

Wilmot enjoyed a reasonably successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with his highlight arguably being his winner against Cardiff City in the South Wales derby, but hasn't started a league game for the Hornets, ironically, since the 2-1 defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

He was recently reunited with the Swans on the final day of the season, coming off the bench for the final eight minutes of Watford's 2-0 win over Steve Cooper's men.

Despite some promising early showings, the centre-back's made just 14 appearances for Watford this season and, according to The Athletic, the club are now weighing up the merits of either loaning him out again or cashing in for good this summer.

Furthermore, the same report says Swansea are one of the clubs that would potentially be interested should the 21-year-old become available.

Andy Scott, Swansea's head of recruitment, was largely responsible for bringing Wilmot to the Hornets in the first place back in 2018, a move that saw the club pay Stevenage £1m.

There is now a suggestion that he would jump at the chance of a possible reunion this summer, although Watford do have an option to extend the player's contract for another year, in a move that would keep him at the club until 2023.

The Hornets are subsequently in no rush to make a decision, and it seems will use the pre-season period to assess Wilmot further before making a decision as they prepare for a return to the Premier League.

Swansea's own hopes of promotion via the upcoming play-offs are likely to have a big impact on their transfer plans, with Premier League football likely to be integral to any hope of keeping Chelsea loanee and star centre-back Marc Guehi at the club beyond the end of this term.

Losing Guehi would perhaps offer added urgency to strengthening Cooper's centre-back options, although with Ryan Bennett, Ben Cabango, Kyle Naughton and Brandon Cooper all likely to put their hands up for first-team contention next term, it's understood Swansea may well prioritise other areas, particularly if they find themselves still in the Championship.

Promotion may well change that view, with Naughton and Bennett currently the only central defenders with Premier League experience.
