Swansea City defender Mike van der Hoorn bids emotional farewell to the fans as club confirm his departure

Swansea City have confirmed the departure of defender Mike van der Hoorn.

The towering defender had become an important figure at the heart of the Swans' defence in recent years but, upon completion of his contract, he will leave the club after four years in SA1.

The club confirmed they are still locked in ongoing talks with Kyle Naughton and Wayne Routledge, both of whom are also out of contract, about their futures.

The 27-year-old Van der Hoorn, who captained the club under Graham Potter in the 2018/19 season, joined from Ajax four years ago and has gained an excellent reputation as an uncompromising defender on these shores.

However, it is now time for him to move on to pastures new, but not before bidding an emotional farewell to the Liberty Stadium faithful.

“Swansea will always be a special place for me,” he told the club's website. “I came here and it was the first time I had not been at home, that I had been abroad, in my career.

“My son was born here, so it will always be a special place for our family, and I will come back. I will want to show my son where he was born, and we have made a lot of friends here.

“We will try and come and visit the games, we will see what the future holds. I cannot believe these four years have happened so quickly.

“There are special moments, your first appearance, first goal, first game as captain. You remember all those as they are steps in your career.

“There were some crazy games – like the Crystal Palace game at home – and the managers I have worked with, and the boys.

“There have been so many good players, so many friends. Not only the players, but the staff too. It’s one big family. I was told that when I arrived, that this is a special place, and I can say I definitely agree.”

Goalkeeper Erwin Mulder has already left south Wales for Heerenveen, while it looks like the same fate could befall Nathan Dyer, who also has not signed a new deal.

Swansea have already lost six loan players, too, Freddie Woodman, Ben Wilmot, Marc Guehi, Aldo Kalulu, Conor Gallagher and Rhian Brewster.

Manager Steve Cooper, however, is hoping to bring Woodman, Guehi and Brewster back on loan for the 2020/21 season.
