Swansea City closing in on Ipswich's Flynn Downes and are frontrunners for Man Utd's Ethan Laird

Swansea City are closing in on signing Flynn Downes from Ipswich Town.

The Swans have been determined to bolster their ranks following the appointment of Russell Martin as head coach last weekend.

He has already signed free agent Jamie Paterson - with the former Bristol City man scoring on his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Following the game in Lancashire, Martin admitted he was hopeful of making further additions to his squad in the near future.

And it’s understood the Swans are confident of clinching a deal to take 22-year-old midfielder Downes to the Liberty Stadium.

They are also the frontrunners to strike a loan deal for Manchester United defender Ethan Laird.

Swansea are yet to use any of their loan slots, but Laird - who worked under the current Swans boss at MK Dons - could well be the first temporary addition of the Martin era.

When asked after the defeat at Blackburn if he hopes to make signings in the coming days, Martin said : “I think we will.

“I can’t come out here and promise it because football changes very quickly and things happen that you can’t legislate for.

“We need some more guys in the building to help the ones we’ve already got. I think the guys already in the dressing room deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve done over the last year or two and the way they’ve attacked pre-season amidst all of the uncertainty that’s been going on.

“They do need a hand because we’re a bit light, especially in certain positions.

“We’ve been working really hard on that with Mark [Allen], Andy [Scott] and Julian and I’m confident we’ll have some new players in very soon.”

The transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, August 31.
