Swansea City chairman Trevor Birch offers update on Borja Baston's future after Oli McBurnie sale to Sheffield United

Swansea City chairman Trevor Birch has spoken about the future of Borja Baston, saying it is now likely the Spaniard will stay with the club.

Birch and the club had made no secret about wanting to sell the forward this summer, with the club desperate to get big wages off the books to help balance their financial situation.

Birch had stated that his wages, along with Jordan and Andre Ayew's payslips, were "potentially crippling" the club.

However, the £18m sale of striker Oli McBurnie has seen Baston start the season as the Swans' forward of choice, with the 26-year-old being named in the starting lineup to face Hull City in their Championship opener.

And speaking before the match to BBC Radio Wales , Birch confirmed that the Spanish striker appears set to stay in SA1.

“Again the Oli deal has given us flexibility so it remains to be seen whether Borja will stay with us," he said.

“The likelihood is he will now and hopefully he makes a good start and we’ll see what happens.”

Baston's start against Hull was his first league start for the club since the 4-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham in March 2018.

In the past three seasons, he has scored just eight goals - with his last competitive goal for the Swans coming back in October 2016.
