Swansea city centre’s famous Reeds bakery closing after 100 years due to energy costs

A much-loved bakery which has been a fixture of Swansea city centre's main shopping thoroughfare for 100 years has announced it is to shut down for good. Reeds Bakery has been one of the most popular food businesses to trade along Oxford Street for generations, but it is now less than two weeks away from closing.

The decision has been described as "necessary" in a notice stuck in its window, with increasing energy and material costs, and a reduction in footfall since the coronavirus pandemic, cited as the key reasons behind the move. The business won plenty of loyal customers through the years for its homemade pasties and savouries, hot filled baps, filled rolls and cakes.

Reeds, which will cease trading on Saturday, March 25, is not the only business to have suffered as a result of rising energy costs in Swansea city centre. We reported in February how BrewDog had closed its doors for good because of "increasing costs and spiralling energy bills".

The chain explained how it was a "difficult decision" to close the bar, blaming the current economic climate. And Smoke Haus in Wind Street has also made the decision to reduce its opening hours as a result of the hike in costs. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

A notice in its window reads: "It is with regret I need to inform you that this family business which has been operating for 100 years will cease trading at the end of business on Saturday, March 25. This closure is necessary due to increasing energy and material costs and a reduction in footfall since the Covid pandemic.

"I would like to thank all customers for their support during the time our family has been operating this business."
