Swansea city centre car park set to become affordable homes

A development of 33 new homes will replace a car park in Swansea city centre under redevelopment plans.

Swansea Council has put forward plans for 33 apartments, 10 of which will be affordable housing, at the current car park at Albert Row in the city centre.

The building will have nine floors with social rent housing mixed among the private housing and there will be commercial spaces available on the lower floors.

Alongside the apartments will be a new multi-storey car park.

It is part of the central redevelopment project, which includes a 3,500-seater indoor arena as well as new shops and restaurants.

The apartments would be built on land just off Oystermouth Road (Jonathan Myers)

Documents submitted with the application state that: "Pobl will be acquiring all 33 residents units upon completion of the development.

"The criteria to occupy the affordable housing units is arranged by Pobl, who manage their own waiting list in Swansea but do have a nomination agreement where Swansea Council are requested referrals for 50% of the units.

"Pobl aims to create a mixed community whereby there is a mix of residents within our schemes to ensure long term sustainability and creating a mixed harmonious community."

Council leader Rob Stewart previously said that the project is expected to boost the city centre economy by £40 million per year while also creating hundreds of jobs.
