Swansea City, Celtic, Rangers and Sunderland target says goodbye as prolific striker to spark transfer scramble

Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland has confirmed he is leaving the club.

The prolific forward has bagged 34 goals for the Honest Men this season in an attempt to get them promoted to the Scottish top flight.

Ayr lost out to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the play-offs, but Shankland was on the move regardless of whether promotion was secured.

A host of clubs are chasing him, including Swansea City , Celtic, Rangers and Sunderland.

He wrote on Twitter: “Most enjoyable two seasons of my career so far and a time I’ll definitely not forget.

“Thanks to all my team-mates and the staff and wish everyone at @AyrUnitedFC all the best for the future.”

Shankland revealed recently that his next move would be more for his development, not one driven by financial factors.

He said: “I’ve played two full seasons now and done well.

“People were doubting me a wee bit at the start of the season because I’d been in the Championship but not done that great.

“It’s been good to show I can play at this level and if I get the chance to play in the Premiership or wherever then I will look forward to it.

“It’s honestly not about the money for me. I want to keep improving and the money will come if you do well enough.

“I want to go somewhere where I can go and show people what I can do.”

Swansea showed interest in Shankland in January, with reports of interest confirmed by their chairman Lachlan Cameron.

Cameron revealed earlier this month that they wouldn't stand in the 23-year-old's way this summer.

“I can’t see any situation where we would be able to hold on to Lawrence, even if we win promotion," Cameron said .

"Part of the deal when he signed again last year was that we would help facilitate a move for him come the end of this season, and we’re getting towards the end of the season and that’s still the plan.

John Hartson on why Daniel James' Leeds United deal broke down and his verdict on Man Utd move

“We won’t stand in his way. He’s done well by us and we’re prepared to back him and I think it’s only a good thing for us as a club. If we want to be able to attract players like Lawrence we need to help them eventually get to a higher level.

“If we can continue that steady stream of talented players coming to us at the start of their careers then the better chance we have of moving forward as a club. And once we’re in a stronger position we’ll have more of a chance of holding on to players like Lawrence. But right now we’re not in a position to do that.”

Swansea will be in the hunt for a striker this summer, with Wilfried Bony now off the books. Talisman Oli McBurnie Sheffield United and Brighton target £12m Swansea City striker - reports over the weekend, with speculation only intensifying now that manager Graham Potter seems destined for the vacant Seagulls job.

As he is out of contract, Shankland would prove an attractive proposition.
