Steve Cooper quits Swansea amid "concerns" over club's direction - with swift replacement expected

Steve Cooper is to leave Swansea City - just two weeks before the start of the new Championship campaign.

Cooper led the Swans to last season's play-off final at Wembley, where they were beaten by Brentford. The year before saw him take City to the semi-finals, in what was his first campaign as a club manager.

He was tentatively linked with a number of vacancies at other clubs this summer, including Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

But, as the Telegraph now report, he is set to quit the club. The report says Cooper is close to agreeing a mutual termination of his contract with an official announcement likely later this week.

It adds that Cooper is leaving "amid concerns over the future direction of the club".

The news comes just a day after Cooper, 41, refused to engage with talk over his future.

Following a friendly win over Plymouth, he told BBC Wales: "I think if there is any real news that's when we would speak.

"There's no official updates on anything. You know I don't like talking about myself so let's focus on the boys.

"I am here, I am working hard. Day by day, that's how it is. I have always been that way. I have not paid attention to anything else.

"If there's anything really official to talk about me, we'll talk about it then but there's not so we'll leave it at that."

The Athletic claim that Swansea have prepared for the departure and that a swift appointment is expected. Cooper himself is understood to be ready to take a break from management rather than jump straight into a new job.

Swansea begin the new Championship campaign away at Blackburn on August 7.

They have seen a number of important players leave over the summer, with top earner Andre Ayew departing on a free and influential loanees Freddie Woodman and Marc Guehi returning to parent clubs.
