Swansea City boss Steve Cooper listed among contenders for Derby County job as Wayne Rooney installed as favourite

Steve Cooper has been listed as the fourth favourite to become the next Derby County manager.

The Rams sacked Phillip Cocu - with Chris van der Weerden and Twan Scheepers also leaving the club - last week and are currently searching for a new boss.

And Swansea City head coach Cooper is the 5/1 fourth favourite to take the role.

Wayne Rooney is the leading contender to take over from Cocu, with the Manchester United and England legend at 7/4 to become the next permanent Derby manager.

He is closely followed by John Terry who is the 7/2 second favourite for the plum role at Pride Park while ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is marginally shorter than Cooper in the betting stakes at 4/1.

Derby are the subject of fresh investment and have confirmed that they have started the search for Cocu's successor.

A club statement read: "Following discussions between the board and the club’s new investors, the formal process for identifying the next manager of Derby County is under way.

"The club will provide further communication when appropriate."

Eddie Howe, Steven Gerrard, Alan Pardew and former Swansea boss Garry Monk - who recently left Sheffield Wednesday - are also among Sky Bet's list of contenders.

Derby are currently rooted to the foot of the Championship table having claimed just six points from their opening 11 matches of the 2020/21 campaign.

Swansea are sixth ahead of their match against Rotherham United at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
