Swansea City boss makes transfer admission over Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman

Swansea City boss Steve Cooper has confirmed he would like Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to remain at the club beyond his season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old has impressed in his temporary stint at the Liberty Stadium so far, playing every minute of their Championship campaign and registering nine clean sheets in the league.

Woodman's deal at St James' Park runs until 2021, but he has rejected previous offers of a contract extension over concerns for his playing time.

The Magpies are likely to face a goalkeeping reshuffle in the summer, with Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot both coming to the end of their deals.

Martin Dubravka's impressive displays means it is unlikely Woodman will be able to immediately dislodge the Slovakian international on his return.

The young shot-stopper's displays in South Wales have prompted talk of a permanent deal, and Cooper believes the Magpies' youngster would be keen to remain at the Liberty Stadium.

Speaking to our sister title Wales Online, Cooper said: "We'd all love Freddie to stay for longer than the season.

"Whether that's possible, we'll have a look in the summer. I think he'd definitely like to.

"The affection the fans have shown Freddie, I think he really feels it and likes to show it back because it's mutual."
