Swans skipper Kennedy to play on in 2022

Veteran Josh Kennedy has signed a one-year AFL contract extension with the Sydney Swans. (AAP)

Sydney co-captain Josh Kennedy will extend his AFL career into a 15th season, having signed a one-year contract extension for 2022.

Kennedy's new deal means he is on track to marshal the Swans' midfield at age 34, while a 300-game milestone will be on the cards next year if he remains fit.

The veteran has been one of the club's most consistent players since leaving Hawthorn at the end of the 2009 season.

The son and grandson of Hawthorn royalty has collected three All-Australian blazers and three club best-and-fairest awards at Sydney, earning a reputation as one of the league's contested-ball kings.

"Walking into the club feels like I am walking in the front door of home," Kennedy said,

"I'm really excited about the group we have at the moment and where we can go.

"One of my major goals is to get us back up to competing for finals.

"If I can be around long enough for that to happen, that would make me very proud."

The sixth-placed Swans, who are on track to return to finals after a two-year absence, host 17th-placed Hawthorn at the SCG on Friday night.
