Swan 'waves' at firefighters who rescued it in Dublin

A grateful swan "waved" to firefighters who rescued it from the confines of a lock of the Royal Canal.

Members of the Dublin Fire Brigade came to the rescue of the distressed bird, who was nicknamed "Swanny".

Swans are unable to fly when they get stuck within a lock and can become stressed, DublinLive reports.

Cork City Fire Brigade share dramatic photos of crew battling a blaze

The firefighters at the Phibsborough Fire Station reckon that after they were rescued, 'Swanny' threw them a wave to say thanks for the help.

Dublin Fire Brigade said: "Earlier today, Firefighters from Phibsborough Fire Station came to the rescue of a swan who became trapped in a lock of the Royal Canal.

"Swans cannot take off in the confines of a lock and can become distressed. ‘Swanny’ waved at the crew as he carried on his (or her) way."
