Stephen Bayne’s traditional production brings together Swan Lake’s psychological intimacy with the grandeur of an Edwardian set. The production was commissioned for the Australian Ballet’s 50th anniversary in 2012 because the ballet was the first to be danced by the company in 1962. With designs by Hugh Colman, the spectral beauty is drawn back into early 20th century splendour.
The classic places the lost, forlorn Siegfried in a realm of mystery and enchantment, where he falls in love with the swan queen Odette. Yet he is tricked and betrayed by the seductive black swan Odile, and is only redeemed in death.
