Swan found shot dead on golf course

A swan was found dead on a golf course after being shot in the head.

On Tuesday, April, 25 Merseyside Police were called to a report of a dead swan found at Hesketh Golf Club on Cockle Dicks Lane in Southport. The animal's was taken to a local vet where a post mortem was carried out.

Police have established that before 8.30pm on Tuesday, the swan was shot with a metal nut. An investigation is currently underway.

Martin Edge Secretary Manager of Hesketh Golf Club said the swan was found at the 5 hole of the course and may have been from the RSPCA nature reserve that borders the golf club. Martin said: "I'm deeply saddened that anyone would do such a thing to an innocent animal and if we can do anything to help we will."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 2.10pm on Tuesday 25 April we were called to a report of a dead swan found at a Golf Club in Cockle Dicks Lane in Southport.

"Further reports established that before 8.30pm on Tuesday, the swan was shot with a metal nut and taken to the vets for examinations. An investigation is underway."
