Sven-Goran Eriksson set to become new Jamaica boss to prolong 43-year managerial career

Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to become the new manager of Jamaica.

Eriksson, 72, is the No 1 choice of the Reggae Boys following the resignation of Theodore Whitmore earlier this summer.

The Swede has been out of work for more than a year after a spell in charge of the national team of the Philippines.

Eriksson is expected to accept a job with the Jamaican FA that will see him combine a coaching brief with a role as technical director.

His challenge will be to qualify the Caribbean island for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Jamaica's only appearance in the finals was in France in 1998.

Former Manchester City, Leicester and Notts County boss Eriksson has enjoyed a well-travelled career in 43 years in management.

He took England to the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as two European Championships but was unable to guide his Golden Generation beyond the quarter-finals of any tournament.

Jamaica will be the 11th country he has managed in and he has also been in charge of the national teams of Mexico and the Ivory Coast.

He has spent the last seven years working in the Far East, first with clubs in China and then with the Philippines.

Eriksson confirmed to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet: “I have received questions about Jamaica via an intermediary.

“It is an exciting national team and a country when it is warm and comfortable to live.

“It is difficult to say anything else until something becomes more concrete.”
